Bradford Bulls v York Knights: Match Preview

York Knights travel to take on rivals, Bradford Bulls in the Betfred Super League on Friday 5th June (8pm)!

The match at Bartercard Odsal Stadium is the first time they’ve met since both were promoted to the top flight.

Over the last few seasons, there’s been some huge contests between the clubs, with both battling for supremacy in the Championship, and those battles are set to resume this year.

The Knights and the Bulls met three times last year, with York winning both league encounters (20-18 at Odsal, and 16-14 at LNER Community Stadium) and also the AB Sundecks 1895 Cup semi final by 28-20 at home to send them through to the final at Wembley.

Since 2018, when games between the two clubs became a regular fixture, York have won ten of those encounters compared to Bradford’s seven.

The last time they met in the top flight was in 1985/86, in York’s last appearance at the highest level. That season, York ran out 17-12 winner at Odsal, before a narrow 9-8 win at Clarence Street. Wayne Morrell and Gary Price scored for Phil Lowe’s side that day, while Steve Dobson kicked the drop goal. Steve Donlan got Bradford’s try, with two goals from John Woods.

This year, like York, Bradford have had a long injury list to deal with, and they sit one place and two points above them in the table with four wins from 12 games. After back to back wins against Catalans Dragons and Toulouse Olympique, they’ve beaten Huddersfield Giants and they ended a five match losing run with a 16-14 win at home to Hull FC.

After losing the last three games, York are looking for their first win since beating Toulouse at home in April.

There could also be some players available for Mark Applegarth after injury, including Jordan Thompson, Paul Vaughan and captain, Liam Harris.
