Cuthbertson to become a Knight thanks to Squadbuilder!

York City Knights are delighted to confirm the signature of two-time Super League Grand Final winning prop Adam Cuthbertson from Leeds Rhinos on a one-year-deal.

This signing was possible due to a sizeable donation from the Squadbuilder fund. The club would like to thank all who contribute to the fund weekly and to the individuals who have made large donations and wish to remain anonymous.

After making over a century of appearances in the NRL during spells with Manly Sea Eagles, Cronulla Sharks, St. George Illawarra and Newcastle Knights, Cuthbertson arrived in the UK ahead of the 2015 season, a campaign in which he shone as the Rhinos completed a domestic treble.

His part in that campaign saw him named in the 2015 Super League Dream team, a season which saw him break the top-flight’s offload record with 125 and cross for nine tries in thirty-four appearances for the Emerald Headingley Stadium club. He also started in that year’s Challenge Cup Final, one where Leeds recorded the biggest ever victory in the showpiece occasion, defeating Hull KR 50-0.

A month later, he started at loose-forward in the Rhinos’ final match of the Super League season where they clinched the League Leaders’ Shield with a dramatic, last-gasp win over Huddersfield Giants.

The Rhinos completed a memorable treble at Old Trafford after that, Cuthbertson coming off the bench as the team defeated Wigan Warriors 22-20 with the Australian forward playing a key part in Danny McGuire’s second-try of the match as he, with a customary offloaded, created the second phase play which led to his try.

Two years later, Cuthbertson was again lifting silverware as he helped his team to a second Super League Grand Final triumph during his spell with the club, starting as Leeds defeated Castleford Tigers.

After beating off competition from other clubs to secure Cuthbertson’s signature, head coach James Ford said: “We should acknowledge the efforts and loyalty of our supporters and sponsors who have enabled us to add Adam to our squad for 2021.

“I feel Adam will make a significant impact on our preparations and culture, as well as our on-field performances. He gives us added leadership and experience, but also a different dimension to our attack with his offload game. I was impressed with Adam’s drive to be the best version of himself, his humility and I’m excited to work with him.”

Cuthbertson himself added: “I’m very excited. I’ve had a good couple of conversations with Jon (Flatman) and Fordy (head coach James Ford) about what they’re aiming to achieve next year so yeah, it’s very exciting and I think it’s a great opportunity.

“The fact that York, as a team, represents such a big city makes it a great opportunity to help the game grow and, hopefully, find our way into Super League.”
