York Knights kick off their 2024 Betfred Championship campaign with a trip to newly-promoted Doncaster RLFC at the Eco-Power Stadium on Sunday (3pm).
York have enjoyed a strong start to 2024, progressing to the Semi-Finals of the AB Sundecks 1895 Cup for the third time in the last four seasons.
The Knights finished as the highest-placing second-placed side in the group stage after an AB Sundecks 1895 Cup record 114-10 thrashing of Newcastle Thunder and a 40-4 defeat to Wakefield Trinity, qualifying for the Quarter-Finals.
Off-season recruits Will Dagger and Richie Myler both bagged doubles, the latter making his 400th career appearance, in the last eight as Andrew Henderson’s side cruised to a 46-12 victory over Oldham RLFC at the LNER Community Stadium earlier this month.
York were unable to make similar progress in the Betfred Challenge Cup, knocking out Dewsbury Rams thanks to a 14-8 win at the FLAIR Stadium before falling to a 32-16 loss to Sheffield Eagles back on home soil having lost Dagger to a red card and seen Jesse Dee and Jordan Thompson (twice) sin-binned.
Doncaster meanwhile have had just three outings thus far in 2024. A 40-4 rout of Midlands Hurricanes, in which Tom Halliday notched a hat-trick, began the season before Sheffield Eagles (18-22) and Widnes Vikings (50-16) ended the Club’s runs in the AB Sundecks 1895 Cup and the Betfred Challenge Cup.
Despite falling short against some seasoned Betfred Championship outfits, the Dons will still head into the new campaign full of confidence after putting together a strong outfit with several eye-catching signings made over the off-season.
Former England international Reece Lyne has arrived from Wakefield Trinity while prop Suaia Matagi, centre Alex Sutcliffe and utility Joe Lovodua have also come in from the Betfred Super League, the former pair joining from Castleford Tigers and the latter from Hull FC.
Recognisable Betfred Championship faces have been recruited alongside the top-flight talent, with veteran back Craig Hall and New Zealand-born prop Tyla Hepi both departing Featherstone Rovers for the Eco-Power Stadium.
