OFFLOAD

WEBSITE - HEADER (16).png

York RLFC Foundation is proud to be delivering Offload, a nationally recognised mental fitness programme developed by Rugby League Cares, designed to support men who may be experiencing low mood, stress, anxiety or depression.

Offload uses the power of rugby league to help men build mental fitness, confidence and resilience in a safe, supportive and non-judgemental environment. Participants take part in relaxed group sessions that draw on techniques used by professional rugby league players to manage both mental and physical well-being.

Almost one in ten men will experience depression at some point in their lives. Men account for 75% of suicides in the UK, which remains the leading cause of death for men under 50. Despite this, only 36% of people referred to psychological therapies are male.

Since launching in 2017, Offload has had a positive impact on men of all ages across the country. In recent years, the programme has also been successfully delivered to mixed-age groups and different genders, helping to break down stigma around mental health and encourage open conversations.

The programme allows participants to learn practical tools for managing stress, anxiety and everyday challenges. This is achieved by building coping strategies in a supportive group setting, helping to improve confidence, resilience and overall wellbeing. By connecting with others through shared experiences in a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere.

Offload is delivered by a skilled team of staff, including current and former rugby league players and coaches, who share their own experiences and techniques in an open and supportive way. Offload plays a vital role in addressing this imbalance by creating a welcoming, stigma-free environment where men feel comfortable talking, listening, learning and supporting one another.

The free, six-week mental fitness programme for men aged 18+, with an adapted version also available for young people at selected sessions for ages 16–19 years.

The York programme has been made possible thanks to funding awarded by the York Centre for Voluntary Service (York CVS) through the Community Mental Health Transformation Grant Programme.
