AHEAD OF THE GAME
York RLFC Foundation aiming to help stay ‘Ahead of the Game'
York RLFC Foundation is celebrating after securing funding to deliver the groundbreaking “Ahead of the Game” mental health fitness programme across York and North Yorkshire.
The funding will enable the Foundation to expand its mental health offer, supporting boys and girls aged 12 to 18, as well as coaches and families. The programme will help participants recognise the tell-tale signs that someone may be struggling with their mental wellbeing and explore the most effective and safe ways to offer support. It will also empower wider communities to better understand, manage and talk openly about mental health.
Delivered in partnership with Rugby League Cares, Ahead of the Game uses the power of rugby league to equip young people, parents, coaches and teachers with the skills, knowledge and confidence to improve their mental fitness and support the wellbeing of those around them.
The programme comes at a critical time. Nationally, suicide remains the leading cause of death for men under 50, while many continue to struggle in silence due to stigma and barriers to seeking help. Across York and North Yorkshire, these challenges are heightened by demanding, male-dominated industries and the pressures that come with them.
A number of factors contribute to poor mental health among men. Traditional expectations around masculinity often discourage openness, with many viewing help-seeking as a weakness. Mental health can also be difficult to recognise, with emotional distress frequently expressed as anger or withdrawal. In addition, services are not always designed in ways that appeal to men, often feeling clinical or inaccessible. Negative past experiences, combined with wider pressures such as isolation, financial stress and job insecurity, can further limit engagement, while short-term funding can make support inconsistent.
York RLFC Foundation’s approach responds directly to these challenges by meeting people where they are. By framing the conversation around “mental fitness”, the programme uses relatable language to reduce stigma. Sessions are delivered in familiar, non-clinical environments such as schools, sports clubs and workplaces, creating safe spaces where participants feel comfortable. Using the influence of rugby league and positive role models, the programme encourages open conversation and demonstrates that it is okay to seek support.
Through engaging workshops, participants develop a greater understanding of mental health, build resilience and gain confidence to support themselves and others. By involving parents, coaches and wider support networks, the programme creates lasting impact beyond the sessions.
York RLFC Foundation aims to engage thousands of people across York, Selby and surrounding areas, focusing on communities most in need. Delivery will take place in schools, clubs and community settings, as well as at the LNER Community Stadium. The programme will also strengthen the Foundation’s wider mental health work, including Offload.
By improving mental health literacy and encouraging early conversations, Ahead of the Game will help build stronger, healthier and more resilient communities where individuals feel empowered to take control of their wellbeing.
Ahead of the Game will begin rolling out in the coming months, marking another major step forward in the Foundation’s mission to use rugby league as a force for positive social change.
