A Sit Down with Ata Hingano

As one of the most eye-catching players in the York Knights squad, 2026 could be a big year for half-back, Ata Hingano!

It's a return to the Betfred Super League for the former Tongan international who played in the top flight for Salford back in 2021, and he can't wait for the challenge again.

"It's exciting," he says. "I think I'm more excited for some of the lads who haven't played there yet. I know for them it's their own personal goal so just to share their personal excitement and be part of their journey makes me happy."

After moving to York from Leigh in 2022, the start of Hingano's career at the LNER Community Stadium was hit by injuries. He's gone on to become a near ever present in 2024 and 2025, showing some of his best form in York colours. He's now made 70 appearances and scored 19 tries for the club.

"It's coming on to my fourth year and to see where we started off and now be at the pinnacle of rugby league, it's pleasing to see where we've come from to finally be where we deserve.

"Everything will be at its highest standard, from standard of the game to preparation, to all the little things you think you can get away with in the Championship, you can't in Super League!"

With the change of level has come a change in the playing group, and with it, Hingano knows he'll be facing more competition to keep his shirt. However, he's also taking that in his stride.

"It's pretty easy going. We've got a good group. We've got boys that are challenging me but as well as needing to be coached, I want to be a sponge and learn off them."

With his form over the last couple of years, Hingano has certainly become one of the supporters' favourites. Heading into a historic season, he's also got a message for them.

"Just keep getting behind us! I think other teams are going to bring their fans so just be louder than them!

"Us boys can feel it on the field whether we acknowledge it or not. Some of the boys are quite timid and shy and are not the ones to turn to applaud it but we can feel it.

"So just get behind us and get real loud!"
