A Sit Down with Jack Martin

Describing it as a childhood dream, the step up to Betfred Super League has been what York Knights prop, Jack Martin has been aiming for.

After signing for the club at the back end of 2024, Martin has gone on to cement a place in the team with some huge performances that earned him the club’s Forward of the Year award after clinching the Championship League Leaders Shield and AB Sundecks 1895 Cup win in 2025. He made 31 appearances, scoring 6 tries.

With the move into the top flight came a number of changes, not least the new signings for 2026, but also the move to the club going full time but the Australian has been relishing that since pre-season.

“Pre-season training was very cold but it was very good to see some new and old faces,” he says.

“I tried to cope with the cold with more layers! I tried to brave it on day one and two in shorts and t-shirts to try and acclimatise, but I think it backfired!

“It’s been good to get back in a full time environment. It benefits everyone being in every day with full time coaching staff, strength and condition etcetera.

“We got thrown in the deep end early on with all the big clubs we came up against. It was a sink or swim situation.”

Still only 24-years old, he made 32 appearances in the Queensland Cup and twice played in the New South Wales Cup in the reserve grade. He’s also a former Queensland Under 19s representative.

However, he knows he’s still got plenty to learn and has been drawing on the experience of those around him, particularly Paul Vaughan.

“He’s a big one for us, Vaughany. He’s done it all in the NRL and Super League.

“I’ve been picking his brain. Just bouncing off one another and getting little things here and there.

“It’s pretty cool to play and train alongside someone who has that impressive resume.”
