A Sit Down with Jordan Thompson

One of the longer serving players in the York Knights' squad, Jordan Thompson has become something of a club legend!

Nominated for the Betfred Championship Player of the Year in 2025, Thompson made his return to the Betfred Super League in 2026.

Recently back in the team after three months out with injury, he brings his well known long stints on the field, tough carries and ferocious tackling. At 34 years old, he’s made almost 400 career appearances, and more than 100 in his four seasons with York, which has become the club he’s played for most since joining in 2022.

Even at the back end of his career, he says deciding to re-sign and have another go in Super League was easy.

“It wasn’t a tough decision to make,” he says. “Around the time I was re-signing, it was just before the Super League decision got announced.

“That would have been more of an incentive, but it was an easy decision to make. It was a no brainer. I’ve enjoyed my time since signing here.”

Having said that, a return to Super League after six years in the Betfred Championship, first with Leigh and then York, hadn’t really crossed his mind.

“Probably not (thought about it)! Because I’d done it throughout my career, it was all I’d known, I’d not given it much thought then it came about York was pushing for it.

“It’s like a giant family being at York so, it’s great for players that have been able to do it with this club, the city. It’s massive.”

When Thompson signed for York, he stepped into part-time rugby league for the first time. So now, with Super League, he’s back in a full time environment, and he’s had to adjust again.

“Luckily I've found it ok. All I’d known was full time so to drop in to part time, it was really a hard change.

“Going back, I was a bit sceptical about doing it to be honest, but I’ve taken it really well and I’m into the swing of things.”
