A Sit Down with Nikau Williams

When utility player, Nikau Williams waved goodbye to the LNER Community Stadium at the end of the 2024 season, it seemed he'd played his last game in York colours.
However, with the club in Betfred Super League in 2026, the surprise announcement came that he was back for a second stint with the Knights!
The New Zealand born player moved to Australia at the end of his first spell with York, after a season which saw him make 24 appearances.
"I'm really happy to be back," he says. "Clint (Goodchild) got in touch and gave me the opportunity to come back. I was buzzing and took it with both hands.
"I hope to make it a good one. I'm enjoying being back. Its like I never left to be honest. The boys have been very welcoming and I've fitted straight back in."
Although he's only been away a year, Williams says he can see changes around the club.
"It's a bit different for the better. A lot of areas have improved and are a lot more professional. The club is going in the right direction and it's been really good since I've been back."
Over the course of 2024, Williams really showed his utility value, featuring in the centres, the halves and at full back as the Knights went on to finish fourth in the Betfred Championship.
It was a season that was part of the foundation that led to the success of 2025, and Williams admits he kept a close eye on the twists and turns of last season from the other side of the world.
"I definitely missed it, watching the boys from afar. I was waking up and watching and cheering them on.
"Seeing them go as well as they did, I was stoked for the boys. When the opportunity came for me to come back I was happy and glad to be back."
So where does he hope to fit into the squad for the first season in Betfred Super League?
"I see myself as utility. I like to be a player who can be put anywhere and do a job.
"I like to be at half back but I'm happy to play where I'm needed. I'd play prop if needed! But just wherever I'm needed, I'm there.
"I'm looking forward to the challenge and everything that comes, I can't wait."
