Dewsbury Rams v York Knights - Match Preview

🤝 York RLFC Match Previews are proudly sponsored by David Lloyd York!

Mark Applegarth will take charge of his first match as York Knights Head Coach when his side travel to bottom club Dewsbury Rams on Sunday (3pm).

Following Andrew Henderson’s switch to Head of Rugby Operations and Development last week, Applegarth has joined as the new Knights Head Coach, having most recently been at the helm of Betfred Super League side Wakefield Trinity during the 2023 season.

Applegarth’s first contest as Knights boss sees York make the trip to the FLAIR Stadium, hoping for a response following the narrow 22-18 defeat to Widnes Vikings last time out.

York made a storming start at the LNER Community Stadium that afternoon, going into the half-time break with a 14-0 lead thanks to tries from Conor Fitzsimmons and Joe Brown.

But Widnes rallied to steal the points in the second half after a double from Kieran Dixon and scores from Matty Fozard and Mike Butt.

The Knights will be hoping to build on the positives seen in that display and from the consecutive victories posted ahead of that clash over Halifax Panthers (40-18) and Swinton Lions (22-30).

This weekend’s opponents Dewsbury currently find themselves bottom of the Betfred Championship, having picked up one victory from 10 league matches to date.

Dewsbury were promoted to the second division at the first time of asking last year, winning the Betfred League One title after losing just twice from 18 outings and finishing above three points above second-placed Hunslet in the process.

The Rams have found life difficult upon their return to the Betfred Championship however, with their solitary league win registered over Woollen Derby rivals Batley Bulldogs by a 24-4 scoreline at the FLAIR Stadium in March.

Alongside seeking to crown Applegarth’s debut match in charge with a victory, York will be hopeful of maintaining their strong recent record over Dewsbury.

The Knights won all of their last six contests against the West Yorkshire club, with the latest meeting coming back in February as York prevailed 14-8 in the Betfred Challenge Cup thanks to a last-minute Nikau Williams try.
