Hetherington has eyes on the prize

The Knights return to Headingley this Sunday for our Betfred Women’s Super League Play-Off Semi-Final against Wigan Warriors, the scene of last weekend’s League Leaders’ Shield triumph.

Half-back Georgie Hetherington returned to action in that 22-14 victory and shared that she was delighted to be back, not just for that game but also for the Play-Offs.

“I was absolutely buzzing to be back to help the girls win the league. It was great to play on Sunday for the first time in a few weeks and I’m looking forward to the Play-Offs now!”

Reflecting on the eighty minutes that clinched top spot, Hetherington reflected on how the team had to turn the game around.

“The girls were really resilient. To go ten points behind, it was tough but the girls kept in the arm wrestle and really showed character to bring the game back our way to come away with the win.”

That victory set up a Play-Off Semi-Final against fourth-placed Wigan, a side the Knights have beaten three times already this year but Hetherington was keen to stress caution.

“We are really confident in what we can do but you can never write Wigan off. They always put up a good fight against us but we know what we need to do. We need to be focussed from the first minute, keep building on the performances we’ve been delivering throughout this season to come away with the win.”

Hetherington was one of a clutch of new signings throughout 2021, joining towards the end of last season, and admitted that she has been surprised by the quick progress the team has shown.

“In the last twelve months, we’ve come on leaps and bounces. That’s all thanks to the work that gets put in behind the scenes. We’ve got a great team of coaching staff and they deserve some real credit.

“Obviously the girls, as well. We’re all really hungry for this and we’ve got tunnel vision. We’ve all set our sights on the big trophies that we want to win!”

The Ladies were roared on at Headingley last weekend by a sterling showing from the Knights support.

“They were fabulous,” Hetherington said. “We couldn’t have done it without the backing and support that they gave us. Even when we were behind, they never stopped cheering for us and having faith that we would get it done. It really spurred us all on.

“It’ll be great to have them there again this Sunday, backing us all the way. Hopefully, we can go on and do them proud over the next few weeks!”

Sunday’s Betfred Women’s Super League Play-Off Semi-Final against Wigan Warriors kicks off at 3pm and is the first part of a double-header featuring St Helens vs Leeds Rhinos. Tickets are all priced at £5 per person and can be bought online HERE.
