Four Knights players depart following end of 2023

York RLFC can confirm that four York Knights players have departed the Club following the conclusion of the 2023 season.

Matty Marsh, James Glover, Olly Butterworth and Ben Barnard will all be moving into the next chapters of their careers.

Everyone at York RLFC would like to thank all four players for their efforts to the Club and wish them the very best in their future careers!

Matty Marsh - #1840

Marsh joined York on dual registration from Hull KR during the 2018 season, helping the Knights to win the Betfred League One title that year.

The full-back was part of the York side which finished third in the Betfred Championship in 2019 and reached the AB Sundecks 1895 Cup Final in 2021.

The 28-year-old was also key in securing the Knights' finish inside the Betfred Championship Play-Offs in 2022 and started in the Club's first Betfred Championship Play-Off victory at Halifax Panthers.

Injuries restricted Marsh to just 10 outings last season, although he managed to surpass 100 appearances for York in 2023.

Marsh's time at York comes to an end after 107 appearances, 63 tries, 16 goals and one drop-goal for the Club.

James Glover - #1907

Glover arrived at York from Sheffield Eagles ahead of the 2022 season and was part of the Knights side which reached the Betfred Championship Play-Offs.

The centre scored the winning penalty goal in the Play-Off Eliminators win at Halifax Panthers, York's first Betfred Championship Play-Offs victory.

Glover returned to Sheffield on loan until the end of the 2023 season in July, with Jason Bass arriving at York as part of a swap deal.

Glover departs York having made 47 appearances for the Club, scoring 17 tries and 61 goals.

Olly Butterworth - #1919

Butterworth signed for the Knights ahead of the 2022 season from Sheffield Eagles but an ACL injury ruled him out of the entire season.

The winger scored three tries on his Knights debut against London Broncos in the Betfred Challenge Cup in May.

He went on to join Betfred League One side Doncaster RLFC on loan in July.

Butterworth made three appearances for the Knights, scoring three tries.

Ben Barnard - #1930

Former Heworth junior Barnard initially came to York on trial terms, making his debut in September 2022 against Workington Town.

The front-rower went on to feature five times last season for the Knights after signing a permanent deal during the off-season.

Barnard earned seven appearances for York during his time at the Club.
