Knights Ladies discover Challenge Cup First Round Opponents

This morning saw York City Knights Ladies discover their Betfred Women’s Challenge Cup opponents following the draw at Leeds United’s Elland Road with Lindsay Anfield’s team set to come up against Wigan Warriors, the team the Knights defeated in the third round last season.

That match was Anfield’s first in charge of the team and the Knights will face the challenge of the highest-profile team in Pool B of the draw in a new format for the competition.

With sixteen teams split across four pools, four groups will form the first round of the competition in 2022, guaranteeing three fixtures for each team as the Women’s Challenge Cup begins the Women’s rugby league season.

In the group stage, which saw the top four kept apart in Pool 1, the Knights will face Wigan as well as Bradford Bulls and Widnes Vikings.

The matches will take place in March and April before the top two teams from each group enter the quarter-finals. Each group winner will be guaranteed a home tie and, with the final taking place at the historic Elland Road, Anfield’s Ladies team will be looking to go one step further in the competition they finished as runners-up in during the 2021 season.

In what promises to be a big year for Women’s rugby league in York with several matches at the Rugby League World Cup set to be held in the city, the Knights will be holding more double-headers at the LNER Community Stadium throughout the season.

2022 Season Memberships are available now, with each package guaranteeing you access to each home league match for both our Ladies’ and Men’s teams. For full information on the different Season Membership packages, please visit our website at yorkcityknights.com/22Memberships.
