York City Knights are pleased to announce the signatures of Daniel Barcoe and Harry Dodd from Betfred Super League club Wakefield Trinity.
After starring for their former club in both academy and reserve-grade rugby, York City Knights head coach James Ford is excited to work with the pair in 2021.
On 20-year-old Barcoe, Ford said: “Dan is a very lively hooker-half back who has come highly recommended to us from Mark Applegarth (Mash) at Wakefield Trinity.
“Mash was particularly positive around his character and his drive to be the best version of himself. Danny will be one of three hookers and he’s excited to learn and compete for a spot in our seventeen.”
On his signing, Barcoe, a former Stanningley junior, expressed his delight and excitement at signing for the Knights. “York have got great facilities and a great stadium,” he explained. “It will be good to get my first opportunity at a great club.
As for what Knights fans can expect from him next year in the black and amber, Barcoe said: “I’m a very quick hooker who is good with ball at hand. I can hold my ground in defence and put in a good stint and, in attack, I like to play quick and when I see an opportunity I try to take it at the right time.
“Hopefully after my first appearance they will like what they see in me!”
Of the signing of 19-year-old Dodd, Ford remarked: “Harry is a young man that I’m really excited about working with. He demonstrated a high level of potential in Wakefield’s reserve side and I was very impressed with his maturity, commitment and drive when I met him.
“Harry will be competing with some experienced forwards for an opportunity, and it will be exciting to watch him develop and compete for a starting spot.”
After progressing through Wakefield’s junior setup, Dodd himself is looking forward to getting started with the Knights. “Just seeing what York have achieved over the last couple of years is something that I’d love to be a part of,” he explained. “They are an ambitious club and ambition is something that I thrive on.
“I will always put 100% effort in and give it my all, on and off the pitch.”
The signings of Barcoe and Dodd mean the club now has twelve players signed for next season and more announcements regarding the 2021 squad will be made throughout September.
