York Valkyrie begin their 2023 Betfred Women’s Super League season with a rematch of last year’s Grand Final as they visit Leeds Rhinos in a blockbuster clash at Headingley Stadium on Sunday (3.30pm).
York fell narrowly short to Leeds in 2022’s Grand Final, losing 12-4 at the Totally Wicked Stadium to a Rhinos side that picked up their second BWSL title in the last three seasons.
The Valkyrie will be seeking revenge when they visit Headingley Stadium as part of Rivals Round, with the match being shown live on Sky Showcase and Sky Sports Action and featuring as the curtain raiser before Leeds Rhinos’ Men’s side host Huddersfield Giants (6pm).
Lindsay Anfield’s side head to West Yorkshire with happy recent memories of competing at Headingley Stadium.
Tara Jane Stanley and Katie Langan braces saw York win 22-14 at Leeds in August as the visitors claimed their first ever BWSL League Leaders’ Shield.
A week later at the same venue last year, Anfield’s side beat Wigan Warriors 12-4 in the BWSL Play-Off Semi-Finals.
Following the Grand Final heartbreak, the Valkyrie have strengthened their squad over the off-season, most notably bringing in multiple trophy-winning Leeds prop Aimee Staveley and Salford Red Devils half-back Sade Rihari.
Similarly, Leeds have added a pair of key players to their side thanks to the recruitment of New Zealand international Georgia Hale from Gold Coast Titans and England star Amy Hardcastle from St Helens.
Arguably, the most significant development announced by both Clubs over the off-season though was the news that Leeds and York would pay their female players for the first time from the 2023 season, representing a huge stride forward in the continued growth of women’s rugby league.
