Leigh Leopards v York Knights: Match Preview

York Knights are back on the road on Friday 7th August, when they go to Leigh Leopards in round 22 of Betfred Super League (8pm)!
Mark Applegarth takes his side to the Leigh Sport Village on the back of their thrilling 34-22 win at home to St.Helens which moved them up to 10th in the table with seven wins.
They’ll face an in-form Leigh side, who are challenging for a play off place. After a slow start to the season which saw them win just two games in seven, they’ve gone on to win 11 of their next 14 matches. Last week’s 20-8 defeat at home to Wigan ended a five match winning streak which leaves them sixth in the league, just two points behind fourth placed Warrington.
When they met earlier this season at the LNER Community Stadium, Leigh won 18-6 in a close game, after tries from Josh Charnley, Gareth O’Brien and Jacob Alick-Wiencke. Myles Harrison and Xavier Va’a scored for York.
It’s York’s first visit to Leigh since 2022, when they met in the Championship play off semi-final, when the Super League bound Leopards won 70-10. Matty Marsh and Marcus Stock scored for York in a game that had already gone for the Knights. Jordan Thompson, Liam Harris and Tom Inman are the only players currently at York who played that day.
While there have been some big defeats for the Knights at Leigh, you only need to go back to 2019 to find the last time York won there. After a 9-8 win at Bootham Crescent in their first year in the Championship, York then had a 24-23 win away from home later in the season. Tries from Liam Harris, Matty Marsh and two from Will Oakes saw the Knights take the points, against a Leigh side which had Jordan Thompson and Mitch Clark in its line up.
For the Knights, David Nofoaluma will be back in contention after completing HIA protocols.
