Porter re-joins the Knights!

York City Knights are pleased to confirm that Joe Porter has signed a new one-year contract with the Knights and will come into contention immediately for Sunday’s Betfred Challenge Cup Round Five match against Whitehaven RLFC.

Porter has made 74 appearances for the Knights since making his debut in 2017 after joining from community club York Acorn and made a memorable impact in our Challenge Cup tie against Catalans Dragons the following year when he scored a brace of tries.

The 29-year-old forward suffered a season-ending ACL injury against Newcastle in July last season but, despite his contract ending at the end of the 2021 campaign, Porter has continued his rehabilitation with the Knights medical staff. Recently, he has stepped up his comeback by participating in training and, after signing his new deal, will no doubt be keen to get back wearing the Knights shirt.

On bringing Porter back to the squad, Head Coach James Ford said: “I’m delighted to bring Joe back into the squad. He’s been working quietly on his rehab with our medical and strength & conditioning teams and he has impressed us all with his hard work and dedication to that.

“I’m really looking forward to being able to include Joe in the York team again. Every time he has played for me, he has done so with a tremendous amount of tenacity and endeavour and we speak a lot as a group about not giving up on plays – that typifies Joe.

“I’ve never seen him give up on anything and I’ve really enjoyed working with him previously and I’m sure I’m really going to enjoy working with him again this season, too.”

Porter is available to sponsor and comes into contention for this weekend’s Betfred Challenge Cup Round Five tie at Whitehaven on Sunday (3pm kick off) and he could then make his first home appearance since re-signing in our Knights double-header on Sunday 20th March.

Lindsay Anfield’s Knights Ladies team will kick off proceedings at 12 noon against Wigan Warriors before James Ford’s men face Widnes Vikings at 3pm. Tickets are priced at £20 for adults, £15 for concessions and FREE for under-16s and can be bought now from the York Stadium Management Company Ticket Office HERE.
