Swinton Lions 0-40 York Knights - Match Report

York Knights secured back-to-back Betfred Championship victories for the first time in 2023 after beating Swinton Lions 40-0 at Heywood Road.

Backs Joe Brown, AJ Towse and Myles Harrison each finished with braces while Ata Hingano and Josh Daley also crossed the whitewash in a dominant eight-try display.

York were equally as impressive in defence, denying Swinton any points and winning to nil for the first time since 2019.

Following on from last week's 28-14 victory over 2022's Betfred Championship Play-Off qualifiers Barrow Raiders, the result moves the Knights up to fourth in the table, having won three of their opening five league matches.

The Knights made a blistering start, scoring in their first attacking set after Swinton conceded a drop-out from kick-off.

Hingano's sharp cut-out pass put Towse over in the left corner inside two minutes.

Turning from provider to scorer, Hingano twisted his way over from a scrum play after another Swinton error, this time 10m from their own line.

James Glover added the conversion, his first of four successful efforts from the tee.

Inside a quarter of an hour, the lead was extended to 16-0 as a lovely show of hands from left to right saw Brown give Harrison a stroll-in try.

Swinton almost put points on the board 10 minutes later when George Delaney kicked to the left corner after Towse failed to take Jordan Gibson's bomb, but Mike Butt was unable to finish.

That missed chance was duly punished when returning captain Chris Clarkson, making his first appearance of the season after injury, found a classy offload for Brown to cut inside and score.

York finished the first half in style as Hingano threw a delightful inside reverse pass for Brown to pierce the Swinton line and go in for his second.

Glover's conversion ensured a 26-0 lead at the break.

Just five second-half minutes were needed for the Knights to add to their tally. Josh Daley scooted out of dummy-half to dive in next to the sticks.

10 minutes later, Towse completed his double when Edwards found a tremendous offload from the floor and Hingano passed wide for the Heworth product to finish.

The Knights' quest for further second-half points was disrupted by the losses of Ata Hingano, James Glover and Levi Edwards to injury.

But they still managed one final score with seven minutes to go, as Harrison walked over the whitewash from another off-the-training-ground scrum play. Liam Harris was wide from the kicking tee.
