Valkyrie sign ex-England international Roberts

York Valkyrie are delighted to announce the signing of former England international centre Carrie Roberts, thanks to the support of Squadbuilder.

Roberts, who is proudly sponsored by York's Chocolate Story, departed St Helens in the off-season to focus on her career in the military but is now back in rugby league with York, seeking to boost the Valkyrie’s push for silverware at the culmination of the 2023 Betfred Women’s Super League (BWSL) season.

The 33-year-old enjoyed a hugely successful stint at St Helens, being a key member of the Saints side that won the Betfred Women’s Challenge Cup, BWSL League Leaders’ Shield and BWSL Grand Final treble in 2021.

Roberts also won the 2022 Betfred Women’s Challenge Cup with St Helens starting in the 18-8 win over Leeds Rhinos at Elland Road.

The centre also boasts international experience, having debuted for England in 2015 and represented her nation during last year’s World Cup, scoring a try in the 54-4 victory over Canada.

On signing Roberts, Director of Rugby Lindsay Anfield said: “I’m delighted to bring Carrie into the squad. She brings significant experience, leadership and maturity from her time with both England and St Helens.

“To be able to bring Carrie into the group is a massive boost for us at this stage of the season. We have a young squad, so to be able to sign someone with her experience in is huge.

“I’ve known Carrie for a while, having worked with her during my time coaching with England, and I’ve always been really impressed by her work ethic and how tough and uncompromising she is as an athlete.”

Roberts herself added: “I’m delighted to have to join the Valkyrie and I’m really looking forward to getting stuck in and hopefully helping the team bring home some silverware at the back-end of the season.

“I’ve really missed playing and being part of that team environment. I’m back in work full-time now with my job in the Army. Having been there since January, I’ve settled into the job now and felt like I had the opportunity to commit enough time back into rugby league.

“So, I got in touch with Lindsay and the move stemmed from there!”

Carrie Roberts could make her York debut when the Valkyrie take on St Helens on Friday evening (5.30pm) in a meeting of the Betfred Women’s Super League’s top two.
