Wakefield Trinity v York Knights: Match Preview

York Knights make the trip to the DIY Kitchens Stadium on Saturday to take on Wakefield Trinity in the Betfred Super League (5.30pm)!

There are just three rounds left in this year’s competition, and there’s plenty to play for for both clubs.

After a great season so far, Wakefield are on the verge of securing a play off place. They lie in fourth in the table after 16 wins, three points behind Leeds and Wigan at the top.

They went on a run of seven consecutive wins, and a run of just one defeat in 11 in what’s been an incredible second season for Daryl Powell’s team.

However, they go into this one on a three game losing run, having been beaten at home by Leeds Rhinos (24-22) and St.Helens (46-16), then away at Wigan (26-12).

After last weekend’s round of games, York have slipped to 12th in the table, behind Hull FC on points difference and just two points behind ninth place Toulouse Olympique. They’re in a pack of six teams all separated by just four points from ninth to 14th.

The Knights will be looking for a response after last weekend’s 66-16 defeat at home to Leeds, which was their third consecutive loss, following trips to Leigh Leopards and Warrington Wolves.

When York hosted Wakefield at the LNER Community Stadium earlier in the season, it proved a tight game before Wakefield pulled clear to win 26-14.

The last meeting at the DIY Kitchens Stadium was in 2024, in the Championship Play-Off semi-finals, when Wakefield won 22-13. Oli Field and Ata Hingano scored the tries for York, while Will Dagger kicked two goals and Liam Harris got the drop goal.

That day, both Thomas Doyle and Josh Griffin, who have worn the Knights’ shirt this year, lined up for Wakefield.

For York’s last win at Wakefield, you go back to the second division encounter in 1984, when they won 12-8, thanks to tries from Paul Proctor and Graham Steadman.
