Warrington Wolves v York Knights: Match Preview

York Knights travel to the Halliwell Jones Stadium to take on Warrington Wolves in the Betfred Super League on Thursday 13th August (8pm)!

With five games remaining of the season, both clubs still have plenty to play for as the Wolves are close to securing a play off place, while the Knights are battling to keep distance between themselves and the bottom of the table.

It’s only the second visit to the Halliwell Jones Stadium for the Knights, with the only other being in 2009, when they met Warrington in the fourth round of the Challenge Cup. That ended in a 56-10 win for the Wolves, who were coached by Tony Smith. York were led by coach, Paul March, who played in the halves while current coach, Mark Applegarth was named on the bench.

In fact, a York side has only won once at Warrington, 31-7 in 1958 at Wilderspool.

When the sides met in Super League back in March, the Knights launched a late comeback in the game, only to lose by 38-30 at the LNER Community Stadium. Denive Balmforth, Liam Harris, Ben Jones-Bishop, Toa Mata’afa all scored for the Knights along with Paul Vaughan against his former club. Danny Richardson kicked five goals.

It’s the Knights second consecutive away game, following on from Friday’s 22-14 defeat at Leigh, which sees them sit 10th in the table.

Warrington are fourth, six points behind leaders Leeds, but also six points clear of seventh place St.Helens. They come into the game after back to back wins over Castleford and Bradford.

Since York last played against them, Warrington have made some changes to their regular line up. In place of Marc Sneyd and the injured George Williams, the young pairing of Leon Hayes and Ewan Irwin have become the first choice halves. They’ve also been missing Cai Taylor-Wray, who scored at York.
