Washbrook continues Knights stay!

York City Knights have made a notable addition to their 2021 Betfred Championship squad with the retention of hugely experienced Danny Washbrook.

The forward initially brought with him an incredible 337 games of Super League experience after signing for the Knights ahead of the 2020 season, having spent 11 seasons at Hull FC, split over two spells, after making his debut for the Airlie Birds in 2005.

In 2006 he represented FC in their Grand Final defeat to St Helens before leaving to join Wakefield Trinity in 2012. After four years in West Yorkshire, he returned to his home town club and lifted the Challenge Cup on two occasions.

Washbrook initially made 5 appearances for the Knights in 2020 before the season was cancelled due to Coronavirus, and used his time in lockdown to take part in an epic 380 mile static bike ride, raising over £2000 for the NHS Charities Together and the Dove House Hospice, which is based in Hull

Head Coach James Ford said: “Danny will be a key member of our squad in 2021. His leadership, experience and ability will be vital to our progression. Danny has plenty of utility value but primarily we aiming up at using him in the middle to give us some more ball movement and deception.

“Danny has played an awful lot of Super League and I’m confident his presence will have a huge benefit on some of our younger middles.

“Again I’d like to thank the efforts of our supporters - specifically the Knights 2020 Patrons and Squadbuilder - for their hard work and continuing commitment, which is enabling us to plan and build for what will hopefully be another successful season.”

Washbrook added: “Re-signing with the Knights was an easy decision for me, I enjoyed the first 4 months with the club and they've been great with us during the last 4 months of lockdown.

“The training and playing facilities at the club are spot on, we as players couldn't ask for anything better. The ultimate aim for the club is Super League, whenever that may be, that is the end goal for any ambitious club in the Championship, and I’m looking forward to the challenge of helping the club reach that target.”
