York Knights begin a run of four consecutive away games when they travel to Whitehaven in the Betfred Championship on Sunday (3pm).

With just five games in total remaining of the league season, the Knights are still just two points off the play offs, thanks to the 37-6 win over Batley Bulldogs last weekend.

When the sides met in May at the LNER Community Stadium, Whitehaven scored six unanswered tries in a 36-16 victory, before York got three tries in the space of ten minutes with Joe Brown, Tom Lineham and Jimmy Keinhorst scoring.Ā

Since that defeat, the Knights have gone on to become one of the form teams in the Championship, losing only four of their last 14 games. They’re currently on a run of three consecutive wins, beating Dewsbury (54-12) and Toulouse (20-12) as well as Batley.

Although they've won their last two matches, Whitehaven are going through a difficult time, with changes behind the scenes leading to coach, Jonty Gorley leaving the club.Ā

Former St.Helens forward, Kyle Amor took charge last week, and had to deal with players initially refusing to play the remaining games of the season because of financial uncertainty.Ā

A number of board members stepped down at the Cumbrian club over the summer, and players hadn’t been paid.

After getting a group of 14 players together, Amor led them to an 18-10 win at Dewsbury Rams to climb out of the automatic relegation places.Ā Ā

York haven’t got a good record at The Ortus Rec. Their 40-16 win there in 2022 was the first since Ryedale-York took the points with a 26-13 win in 1992.Ā

In that time, there was also the League 1 play-off semi final in 2017 where a drop goal from Steve Roper in the 126th minute of the game meant Whitehaven progressed with a 21-20 win.Ā
