Widnes Vikings v York Knights - Match Preview

🤝 York RLFC Match Previews are proudly partnered by David Lloyd York!

York Knights will be seeking to move just two points behind seventh-placed Widnes Vikings with a victory at the DCBL Stadium on Sunday (3pm).

York currently sit ninth in the Betfred Championship following the narrow 18-14 home defeat to Toulouse Olympique at the LNER Community Stadium, ending the Knights' four-match winning streak in the league.

Andrew Henderson's side will be hoping to cut the gap to Widnes, who are currently seventh on 22 points after 21 matches, this weekend.

The Vikings find themselves on a run of four straight victories in the Betfred Championship under Interim Coach Neil Belshaw, who replaced Head Coach John Kear following June's 25-18 defeat at home to Swinton Lions.

Widnes have beaten Bradford Bulls (31-14), Keighley Cougars (22-38), Whitehaven (36-28) and Newcastle Thunder (6-50) to leave themselves just one point behind Halifax Panthers, who occupy the final place inside the top six.

The Merseyside club's turnaround has been dramatic, having lost their previous five contests and seven of their last nine matches prior to the win against Bradford.

York meanwhile are seeking to return to winning ways after the defeat to Toulouse, having dispatched Halifax (28-18), Keighley (10-50), Sheffield Eagles (23-18) and London Broncos (10-24) prior to falling short against the French side.

A trip to the DCBL Stadium also provides the Knights with a chance to extend their winning run away to Widnes since promotion to the Betfred Championship in 2019.

Tries from Liam Harris, Junior Vaivai and Will Oakes secured a 16-12 win for York back in 2019 before a Mikey Lewis brace inspired a 35-14 triumph at the DCBL Stadium two years later.

A late Matty Marsh score saw the Knights come from behind to prevail 16-14 in last year's visit to Widnes, the Club's most recent visit away to the Vikings.

York Knights will be seeking a fourth straight away win at Widnes Vikings when they make the trip to the DCBL Stadium on Sunday (3pm).
