Widnes Vikings v York Knights: Match Preview

York Knights will look to extend their winning run when they travel to the DCBL Stadium to face Widnes Vikings in the Befred Championship on Sunday (3pm)!


The Knights’ 20-18 victory at Bradford Bulls last weekend was their seventh league win in eight games, a run which has taken them up to third in the table.


They face a Widnes side who are four points behind them in ninth place in the table, having won five, lost five and drawn two of their games so far. Their latest game was a 24-24 draw at home to Halifax last weekend.


York have already met Widnes twice this year, running out winners in both games. After a 39-6 win the quarter finals of the 1895 Cup at the LNER Community Stadium, the Knights then won 26-12 at home in the league a few weeks later. On that day, Liam Harris, Connor Bailey, Joe Brown, Ata Hingano and Ben Jones-Bishop all scored for York, with Mike Butt and Ryan Ince replying for the Vikings.


Since then, Widnes have managed wins against Hunslet and London Broncos, while losing to Bradford Bulls and Featherstone Rovers.


Last year, the Vikings beat York 22-18 at the LNER Community Stadium before the Knights edged a tight 12-6 victory in the reverse fixture. The teams then met again in the play offs, with York running out 27-10 winners in the Elimination final. Nikau Williams, Joe Law, Jesse Dee and two from Tom Lineham, along with three Williams’ goals saw Mark Applegarth’s side progress to the next round to face Wakefield Trinity.


There’s likely to be a familiar face in the Widnes side for this week’s game. Former Knights winger, AJ Towse is currently on loan with them from Leigh Leopards. He scored his first tries in black and white last weekend, crossing twice in the draw with Halifax.
