York Valkyrie begin the defence of their Betfred Women’s Super League title against Wigan Warriors at the Brick Community Stadium on Friday (5.30pm)!

The Valkyrie have won the Grand Final in the last two years, becoming the first team to successfully defend the title.

It’ll be a tough start to the season against a Wigan Warriors side who beat Leeds Rhinos last weekend to go through to their first ever Betfred Challenge Cup Final.

After going through a period of rebuilding, Denis Betts’ side has made rapid progress over the last year to become a real challenger to the big three of York, Leeds and St.Helens.

York have won the last five meetings away from home against Wigan, with the Warriors last home win coming in August 2019, when they ran out 42-0 victors.

Last season it was one win apiece, with Wigan taking the points, 18-10, at the LNER Community Stadium in July, while the Valkyrie earned a crucial but hard fought 16-12 victory away from home in September as they headed towards the play-offs.

The Warriors have a side that boasts a mix of experience with young players stepping up to the senior side from their Academy.

Half-back pair, Jenna Foubister and Izzy Rowe are both in the England squad, while full-back, Grace Banks won the Player of the Match award in last week’s semi-final.

Experienced forward, Mary Coleman is in the pack, while winger Anna Davies is also part of the England set up, scoring five tries on her international debut against Wales last Autumn.

York have an unchanged squad available to them, having come through last week’s Challenge Cup encounter with St.Helens without any on the day injuries.

It could mean a second appearance for new signing, Zoe Hornby, who made her York debut at the weekend.
