York Knights fell to a 4-40 defeat to former Betfred Super League side Wakefield Trinity in the AB Sundecks 1895 Cup at the LNER Community Stadium.

Wakefield made a rapid start, scoring three tries in the opening 12 minutes before taking a 24-0 lead into the half-time break, with Luke Gale, Jermaine McGillvary, Max Jowitt and Lachlan Walmsley all crossing the whitewash.

Further scores from Caleb Uele and Walmsley saw Trinity move 36-0 ahead early in the second half before York got themselves on the board through Will Jubb’s score.

The visitors had the final word on the contest however, with Walmsley wrapping up his hat-trick in the cup tie’s final play.

Despite the defeat, York still remain in the hunt for a Quarter-Final spot in the AB Sundecks 1895 Cup, having gathered two points and a healthy points difference of +72 from their two group stage matches.

Wakefield got off to a flier at the LNER Community Stadium, racing into an 18-0 advantage inside the first dozen minutes.

Gale got Trinity’s first of the afternoon, touching down Walmsley kick inside after being put away by former York loanee Oli Pratt.

Max Jowitt, who missed just one attempt at goal from seven efforts, added the conversion.

Wakefield then profited down the right edge as former England star McGillvary touched down after a neat shift play.

Ex-Hull FC man Josh Griffin then got on the scoreboard when latching onto Mason Lino’s bullet pass.

Trinity found their fourth try midway through the first 40 minutes when Walmsley dived in at the left corner and while York conjured plenty of field position for the remainder of the half, they could not find a way through.

Like in the first period, Wakefield started quickly after the restart as Uele spun over the line to the left of the sticks on 45 minutes.

Walmsley then grabbed his second by profiting from a cut-out pass from full-back Jowitt.

York continued to press for their first score with Liam Harris twice forcing Jowitt into conceding drop-outs in back-to-back sets, but Trinity held strong until the final 10 minutes.

Jubb eventually found a way through when diving over from Jesse Dee’s clever offload.

The visitors would end the afternoon with a late score however, Walmsley going over for his hat-trick try in the game’s final play down the left flank.
