York Knights v Barrow Raiders - Match Preview

York Knights will be aiming to return to winning ways in the Betfred Championship as they host winless Barrow Raiders at the LNER Community Stadium on Sunday afternoon (3pm).

An understrength York, who finished the match with just 13 fit and available players, fell to a 36-0 defeat to unbeaten league leaders Toulouse Olympique at the Stade Ernest-Wallon.

A quartet of tries from Guy Armitage combined with scores from Olly Ashall-Bott, Mathieu Jussaume and Reubenn Rennie for the home side.

The Knights face a Barrow side that are one of just two clubs yet to get off the mark in the Betfred Championship this year.

The Raiders fell to a 24-4 defeat at home to Toulouse on the opening day of the league season before Sheffield Eagles triumphed 36-16 at Craven Park.

Newly-promoted Swinton Lions inflicted a third straight defeat on Barrow last weekend. Jordan Gibson’s penultimate-minute try secured a dramatic 20-18 victory as the Raiders conceded an 18-10 lead.

Barrow’s sluggish start comes as a shock to many, having enjoyed a hugely successful return to the Betfred Championship last year after being crowned as Betfred League One champions in 2021.

The Raiders finished fourth, 13 points clear inside the top six, before suffering an 18-8 defeat to Batley Bulldogs in the Play-Off eliminators at Craven Park.

That Play-Off disappointed failed to mar an enjoyable 12 months for the Cumbrian club, who won Club of the Year at the 2022 Championship Awards Evening, with boss Paul Crarey named as Coach of the Year.

Barrow’s success saw key centre-wing pairing Tee Ritson and Hakim Miloudi attract the attentions of St Helens and Albi respectively over the off-season.

Whitehaven wide-man Andrew Bulman and Halifax Panthers three-quarter Greg Worthington have been recruited in their stead.

The forward pack was also bolstered in the off-season by the arrivals of Salford Red Devils pair Greg Burke and Jack Wells as well as Bradford Bulls prop Ben Evans.
