York Knights v Castleford Tigers: Match Preview

  • 2 min read

York Knights host Castleford Tigers in the Betfred Super League at the LNER Community Stadium on Saturday 16th May (3pm)!

The game is part of a double header, with York Valkyrie taking on Huddersfield Giants in their opening game of the season in the Betfred Women’s Super League (12pm).

With just points difference separating the Knights and Tigers in the table, there’s plenty at stake for both clubs.

They both return to action after a week off because of the Challenge Cup semi finals, and head into the games on the back of defeats. Last time out, the Knights lost 40-16 at St.Helens, while Castleford were beaten 50-6 by Hull KR.

Like York, the Tigers have won three games so far this season, beating Huddersfield Giants, Bradford Bulls and Wigan Warriors. However, they’ve suffered some big defeats recently, being nilled by Wakefield, and conceding 50 points to both Hull FC and Hull KR.

For the Knights, their last match at home saw them beat Toulouse 38-14 for their third win over the year.

The last time York played Castleford was in the Northern Rail Cup in 2005, which Cas won 24-16. Lee Lingard and Calvin Watson scored the tries for York, and Paul Thorman kicked four goals. For the Tigers, Tommy Haughey, Andrew Henderson, Michael Shenton and Andy Kain all scored, while Kain and Paul Handforth added a goal each.

The teams were due to meet in the Challenge Cup in 2020, only for the competition to be paused and then restructured during the covid pandemic, meaning the match never took place.

Coming up against their former club this weekend, is Sam Wood and of course, Paul McShane, who won the Man of Steel award during an illustrious career with the Tigers. He’ll be facing his former club for the first time since leaving at the end of 2025.

Join us at the LNER Community Stadium as York Knights go for a fourth win in Betfred Super League!
