York Knights will be seeking to reach the Betfred Challenge Cup Quarter-Finals for the first time in almost 20 years when they host London Broncos at the LNER Community Stadium on Sunday afternoon (3pm).
York have progressed to the Sixth Round after victories over West Bowling (52-12), Sheffield Eagles (24-22) and Newcastle Thunder (22-18) and would reach the final eight of the Betfred Challenge Cup with a victory today - a feat not achieved since 2004.
That year saw the then third-tier National League Two outfit York overcome Villeneuve, Sheffield and higher-tier Featherstone Rovers before coming up short against Super League side Huddersfield Giants.
The Knights know that they face no easy task against London however, having been run extremely close in a 30-28 win in the Betfred Championship by the Broncos at the start of the month.
A James Glover penalty goal was all that separated the two sides, who scored five tries each at the LNER Community Stadium in the most recent meeting.
Following that disappointment suffered in North Yorkshire, London responded by beating Barrow Raiders 30-16 at the Cherry Reds Records Stadium in the Betfred Championship - their biggest home league win of the year.
Ethan Natoli, Bill Leyland, Innes Macani, Oli Leyland and Jarred Bassett were London’s try-scorers - with the latter Leyland brother contributing five goals - as a Barrow side fresh from routing Bradford Bulls 46-12 were put to the sword.
The big challenge for Mike Eccles’ side is producing a similarly strong display outside of the capital.
Only relegated pair Dewsbury Rams and Workington Town won fewer away matches than London (three) in 2022 and while triumphs at Whitehaven (16-20) and Newcastle (6-36) have been secured so far this season, defeats at Halifax Panthers (26-18), Keighley Cougars (33-22) and Toulouse Olympique (52-0) have also been endured.
London are featuring in their first Betfred Challenge Cup Sixth Round tie since 2013, the year that the Broncos reached the Semi-Finals of the competition.
Victories over Featherstone, Bradford and Sheffield were sealed by the capital club before eventual winners Wigan Warriors dished out a 70-0 thrashing at the Leigh Sports Village in the Semi-Finals.
