York Knights v Sheffield Eagles - Match Preview

York Knights resume their Betfred Challenge Cup campaign at the Fourth Round stage against in-form Sheffield Eagles at the LNER Community Stadium on Sunday afternoon (12.30pm).

Both York and Sheffield knocked out Community Club opposition in the Third Round last time out, with the Knights beating West Bowling 52-12 and the Eagles winning 34-12 at Siddal.

Sheffield’s victory in Halifax is one of six wins from their previous seven matches, the most impressive of which was a 32-4 triumph over full-time outfit Toulouse Olympique last time out at the Olympic Legacy Arena.

Mark Aston’s side opened the campaign with a narrow 26-18 defeat at Halifax Panthers before victories over last year’s top six clubs Barrow Raiders (16-36) and Batley Bulldogs (36-0).

The Eagles went on to edge past London Broncos 21-20 in the capital before easing to two points against Widnes Vikings in a 42-12 trouncing.

The South Yorkshire club sit third in the Betfred Championship at present, with their off-season squad overhaul seemingly paying dividends.

Aston sought to strength Sheffield’s forward pack with the recruitment of Oliver Roberts (Newcastle Thunder), Titus Gwaze (Halifax), Jesse Sene-Lefao (Featherstone Rovers), Aaron Murphy (Bradford Bulls) and Lewis Peachy (Castleford Tigers) doing just that.

The additions of Cory Aston (Halifax) and Jack Hansen (Swinton Lions) have also added extra depth to the halves, providing competition for existing playmakers Anthony Thackeray and Izaac Farrell.

The Knights meanwhile will be seeking to return to winning ways after suffering back-to-back defeats for the first time this year in losses to Featherstone (46-4) and Whitehaven (12-14).

Andrew Henderson’s side had won four of their last five matches prior to their two most recent setbacks.
