York Knights v St.Helens: Match Preview

York Knights are back at the LNER Community Stadium on Saturday, taking on former Betfred Super League Champions, St.Helens (5.30pm)!

It’s the first time York have met St.Helens at home since 1988, when the two sides met at Clarence Street in the first round of the John Player Trophy. Saints, coached by Alex Murphy won that by 14 points to 6, with Gary Stevens’ York getting points through three penalties from the boot of Graham Sullivan. Darren Bloor and Paul Loughlin got Saints’ tries, while Loughlin kicked three goals.

Other than two meetings in the Challenge Cup, the game at the Brewdog Stadium was the first game between the two since then.

With games between York and St.Helens being few and far between, you have to go back to April 1946 for York's last victory against Saints, when it was a 33-14 home win. Saturday’s game will be only the 20th encounter since then.

Back in May, the Knights lost 40-16 at St.Helens, with Saints on a five match winning run. Since then, Saints have had a mixed bag of results and a long list of injuries. It’s culminated in coach, Paul Rowley leaving the club. Assistant, Eamon O’Carroll was in charge for last week’s defeat at Wigan.

Saints sit in seventh in the table, with 12 wins, needing points to try to get a play off place.

York are in 11th place with six wins to their name. They’re looking for a response after last weekend’s narrow 24-22 defeat at home to Huddersfield Giants. David Nofoaluma failed a head injury assessment at the end of that game and will be ruled out of this weekend’s game as he follows protocols.

For St.Helens, Jed Cartwright and George Delaney could be doubts after taking knocks in their game at Wigan.

Join us at the LNER Community Stadium as St.Helens come to town in round 21 of the Betfred Super League!

The game kicks off at 5.30pm on Saturday 1st August.

Tickets are priced at £25 for Adults, £20 for Concessions (17 to 21-year-olds and over 65s), £5 for Juniors (12-16 year-olds) and FREE for Under 12s!

You can purchase your match tickets online HERE or over the phone from the York Stadium ticket office on 01904 950950 (option 1).
