York Knights v Warrington Wolves: Match Preview

  • 2 min read

York Knights return to the LNER Community Stadium on Friday 6th March to face Warrington Wolves in the Betfred Super League (8pm)!

It’s the first time back at home for York since the opening day win over Hull KR.

Warrington have played one game fewer than the Knights so far, with their scheduled game against Hull KR being postponed because of Rovers’ involvement in the World Club Challenge.

York last met Warrington relatively recently compared to some of the other clubs in the top flight, in the fourth round of the Challenge Cup in 2009. The Knights were beaten 56-10, and current head coach, Mark Applegarth was on the bench.

There were also Challenge Cup meetings in 2000 and 1991, both won by the Wolves. The last league meetings were in 1985/86, when York narrowly lost 14-12 at Wilderspool. Legendary Australians, Mick Marketo, Peter Martin, Matt Carter and Sean Willey were part of the team that day, along with Knights’ assistant coach, Graham Steadman. York lost the reverse fixture at Clarence Street, 34-6.

This match will see former Warrington prop, Paul Vaughan face his former side for the first time since signing for York. He spent three seasons at Warrington, making 78 appearances.

Wolves coach, Sam Burgess will bring the likes of England captain, George Williams to face the Knights, along with prolific goal kicker, Marc Sneyd and young full back, Cai Taylor-Wray, son of former York player, Jamaine Wray. It’s their first ever trip to the LNER Community Stadium.
