York RLFC delighted to welcome over 150 participants to Inclusion Day!

York RLFC were delighted to welcome over 150 participants to our Inclusion Day at the weekend!

The Club hosted the clash between inclusive rugby union side York RI Templars - who provide a safe space for York RI Templars are an inclusive rugby union team, who provide a safe space for homosexual, bisexual, transgender and heterosexual men - and Newcastle Ravens on the LNER Community Stadium field.

Meanwhile our Wheelchair side had their first hit-out in a showcase in the Sports Hall alongside North Wales Crusaders, Wakefield Trinity and Hull KR.

York RLFC’s Learning Disability Rugby League (LDRL) team also took part in a Festival in the Stadium’s 3G pitches and at the half-time break of York Knights’ Betfred Championship clash against Newcastle Thunder.

York RLFC Chairman Clint Goodchild reflected on his delight at the Club and rugby league being able to showcase its inclusivity on a memorable occasion.

“We want rugby league to be a fully inclusive sport and one that sees no colour, age or income,” he said, “and we saw Inclusion Day as the first of an on-going approach to trying to achieve that.

“It was great to see so many participants, not just spectators. We saw our Wheelchair side, launched off the back of the hugely successful World Cup last year.

“Plus, our LDRL team took to the field and it was another really good opportunity for lots of Clubs to come together as one. We’re so thankful for the help and participation from all those that came here.

“And to have the York RI Templars, who have been so celebrated locally, in our beautiful community stadium, was great to see too.

“It was very touching hearing the stories from the Wheelchair and LDRL players and their families and friends.

“Inclusion Day was something that we were all really proud to be a part of and hopefully we can continue on this journey.”

York Knights will be seeking to reach the Betfred Challenge Cup Quarter-Finals for the first time since 2004 when they host London Broncos in the Sixth Round on Sunday 21st May (3pm).
