York RLFC wheelchair player, John Berriman has been selected for the Wales Wheelchair Rugby League squad for the 2026 Rugby League World Cup in Australia!

John earned his place in the 12-player squad following a series of impressive performances in the RFL Wheelchair Championship. The York star now has the opportunity to make his Wales debut on the biggest stage in the sport against the world's best in Australia later this year.

The call-up is a significant milestone for both John and York RLFC's thriving wheelchair rugby league programme, highlighting the growing strength and quality of the club's player pathway.

York RLFC's Wheelchair Rugby League programme has gone from strength to strength since its formation following the legacy of the Rugby League World Cup 2021. Supported by funding and investment linked to the tournament, the programme was established to create inclusive opportunities for people of all abilities to enjoy rugby league and develop their skills in a welcoming environment.

In just a few years, the club has grown into one of the most successful and sustainable wheelchair rugby league programmes in the region. York now regularly fields two playing squads, with one team competing at national level, providing opportunities for players of varying experience and ability to participate and progress within the game.

John's international recognition is not the only success story in recent years, following on from Dawn Shore's selection for the England Women's Wheelchair Rugby League Pathway Squad.
