York Valkyrie v Leeds Rhinos - Match Preview

🤝 York RLFC Match Previews are proudly partnered by David Lloyd York!

York Valkyrie will be aiming to secure a first ever Betfred Women’s Super League Grand Final title when they face rivals Leeds Rhinos on Sunday 8th October (3pm) at the LNER Community Stadium.

York sealed their spot in the BWSL Grand Final for the second year running after coming from behind to beat Wigan Warriors 22-6 at the LNER Community Stadium less than two weeks ago, with Liv Whitehead, Liv Gale, Tara Jane Stanley and Lacey Owen crossing for the home side’s tries.

The Valkyrie’s reward is a 2022 BWSL Grand Final rematch against Leeds, who denied York in last year’s finale after a 12-4 defeat at the Totally Wicked Stadium.

Lindsay Anfield’s side will be confident of being able to inflict revenge on the Rhinos and claim the Club’s first-ever BWSL Grand Final title this Sunday, having gone through the entire league season without defeat.

After 12 league contests in 2023, the Valkyrie’s record stands at 11 victories and one draw - the only blemish to a 100%-winning record being a 12-12 draw with Leeds at the LNER Community Stadium back in JULY.

York will be hoping that this year’s BWSL Grand Final will be third-time lucky following defeats in their only other two major final appearances.

Eventual treble-winners St Helens defeated York 36-6 in the Betfred Women’s Challenge Cup Final at the Leigh Sports Village in 2021 before Leeds’ victory over the Valkyrie in the BWSL Grand Final a year later.

While York are the form team thanks to the outstanding unbeaten record in the league this year, Leeds head to North Yorkshire with plenty of big-game final experience on their resume.

As well as claiming last year’s BWSL Grand Final title, Leeds have won the 2018 and 2019 Betfred Women’s Challenge Cup Finals plus the 2021 BWSL Grand Final.
