York Valkyrie v St Helens - Match Preview

đŸ€ York Valkyrie Match Previews are proudly partnered by David Lloyd York!

The top two from last season’s Betfred Women’s Super League meet at the LNER Community Stadium on Sunday (1pm) as York Valkyrie host St Helens.

York won the League Leaders’ Shield in the Betfred Women’s Super League in 2022, pipping the then-reigning champions St Helens to the silverware by two points after seven wins from their eight regular season matches.

The Saints did though add another trophy to their cabinet last year after 2021’s clean sweep, winning the Betfred Women’s Challenge Cup following a 18-8 win over Leeds Rhinos at Elland Road.

St Helens have had a transitional off-season after the disappointment of failing to reach the Betfred Women’s Super League Grand Final last year.

Former England, St Helens and Wigan Warriors half-back Matty Smith has been appointed as the Club’s new Head Coach, replacing Derek Hardman to the position.

And while star centre Amy Hardcastle has been lost to rivals Leeds Rhinos, the Saints squad boasts nine current England internationals in Leah Burke, Jodie Cunningham, Zoe Harris, Shona Hoyle, Tara Jones, Eboni Partington, Emily Rudge, Paige Travis and Vicky Whitfield.

York began their 2023 campaign with a stunning 34-12 victory over reigning champions Leeds Rhinos at Headingley Stadium on Sunday in a repeat of last year’s Grand Final.

Tries from Tamzin Renouf, Ashleigh Hyde, Hollie-Mae Dodd, Liv Gale, Tara Jane Stanley and Ellie Hendry saw the Valkyrie make a dream start to the new season.

The fixture was a standalone season opener in the Betfred Women’s Super League, with St Helens kicking off their competitive action for the year this weekend.

Smith’s side do though head to North Yorkshire on the back of a 76-0 thrashing of Betfred Women’s Super League Group Two side Bradford Bulls earlier this month, running in 14 tries without reply at Thatto Heath’s Crusader Park.
