York Valkyrie secured their place in the top four of the Betfred Women’s Super League, with a 44-12 win at Barrow Raiders Ladies.

Scoring ten tries in all, including a brace for Petra Woods, Brooke Henderson and Adoaha Akwiwu, the Valkyrie built an unassailable lead with a dominant first half performance.

Barrow’s tries came late in the game, and never troubled the Valkyrie’s lead as they get ready

York opened the scoring quickly through Petra Woods who took advantage of space out wide, before Amelie Lenham followed up soon afterwards on the back of a penalty close to the line. Williamson couldn’t convert either.

Another penalty to York allowed Izzy Bibby to stretch York’s lead with the first of a quick double, scoring twice in three minutes. The second of her tries was converted by Izzy Brennan.

Agnes Wood was the next to go in, and with Brennan good again with the conversion, the Valkyrie were scoring at just less than a point a minute.

Adaoha Akwiwu, playing in the second row, was the next to get on the scoresheet after York were awarded another set near the Barrow line. It meant the Valkyrie had a 28-0 lead at the break after a dominant first half.

It wasn’t long after the re-start that the scoring continued. This time, it was Brooke Henderson, on from the bench, who scored back to back tries. First, she took advantage of an overlap, before she was on the end of a move which shipped the ball wide to the right.

There was an hour gone before Barrow got off the mark, through an effort from Lucy Dickinson after some pressure on the York line. Nicole Stewart tagged on the goal.

However, that was soon cancelled out when Woods scored her second of the game. Williamson was back on kicking duties, but couldn’t add the conversion.

Akwiwu showed some good pace to go over for her second, but Jaz Bell fell short with her attempt at goal.

The league points were heading back to North Yorkshire, but Barrow weren’t quite done. Leah Clough scored a converted try as a consolation, driving over from close to the line with five minutes remaining.
