York Knights begin their Betfred Challenge Cup campaign with a third round tie at Barrow Raiders on Saturday 7th February at the Northern Competitions Stadium (6pm)!
It’ll be the Knights’ first competitive game of the year, following on from their pre-season match at Huddersfield, and ahead of their opening Betfred Super League game against Hull KR on Thursday 12th February.
They’re coming up against a Barrow side who are unbeaten in their opening three games of the year. They sit top of the Betfred Championship after a 40-0 win at home to Cumbrian rivals, Workington, and a 38-4 win over Salford last weekend. They beat community club Wigan St.Judes 74-6 in the second round of the Challenge Cup to get to this stage.
York beat Barrow twice last season as they went on to finish top of the Championship table. Back in March, the Knights won 36-12, with tries from Ben Jones-Bishop, Jesse Dee, Jude Ferreira and a hat-trick from Liam Harris. They then won 26-12 in June at the LNER Community Stadium.
The Knights were knocked out of the Challenge Cup at this stage last year, losing 44-2 at home to Hull KR. Barrow also went out at the same point of the competition, going down 42-4 at Oldham.
The game will potentially see a number of York players make their competitive debuts for the club, with coach, Mark Applegarth signing a number of new players in the off season as they prepare for their first year in the top flight.
For Barrow, former Toulouse forward, Greg Richards has joined in the off season, along with pacy winger, Tee Ritson. He’s made his moved back to Cumbria permanent after two seasons at St.Helens.
