York Knights begin their Betfred Challenge Cup campaign with a trip to reigning Betfred League One champions Dewsbury Rams at the FLAIR Stadium on Sunday (2pm).
York enjoyed huge success in the Betfred Challenge Cup last year, reaching the Quarter-Finals of the competition for the first time since 2004.
The Knights triumphed past West Bowling (52-12), Sheffield Eagles (24-22), Newcastle Thunder (22-18) and London Broncos (36-12) to reach the final eight before losing out only to eventual Wembley Stadium winners Leigh Leopards 34-14.
Last month’s Betfred Challenge Cup Third round draw handed York with an away tie against Dewsbury, who secured an immediate return to the Betfred Championship last year.
The Rams lost just twice from 18 Betfred League One matches to pip second-placed Hunslet RLFC to the title by three points after relegation to the third tier in 2022.
Dewsbury were led back to the Betfred Championship by Head Coach Liam Finn, with the ex-Castleford Tigers and Wakefield Trinity half-back rewarded by a job offer from former club Halifax Panthers.
Scotland Captain and Rams prop Dale Ferguson hung up his boots and was handed the reins at the FLAIR Stadium.
Ferguson’s side are still seeking their first win of the year after back-to-back defeats in the AB Sundecks 1895 Cup to begin 2024.
Keighley Cougars, who were relegated from the Betfred Championship last year, dispatched Dewsbury 35-6 at Cougar Park before Bradford Bulls came out on top 40-4 at the FLAIR Stadium last weekend.
Andrew Henderson’s York Knights make the trip to West Yorkshire eager to retain a strong recent record over Dewsbury.
The last five meetings of the two sides have all ended in York victories, the most recent of which seeing the Knights finish as 22-10 winners at the FLAIR Stadium in August 2022. A second-half double from Matty Marsh combined with tries from Liam Harris and Ata Hingano.
