York Knights continued their recruitment drive ahead of the 2024 season by signing Newcastle Thunder back Alex Donaghy.
We spoke to Donaghy about his decision to sign for York as the Knights seek to build on last season's sixth-placed finish.
Alex, welcome to York! How delighted are you to have signed for the Knights?
“Yeah, I’m really excited to be here. I’ve played against York a few times before with Newcastle Thunder and know that it's a really good Club and I can’t wait to get started here. There’s lots of good things happening here, so I’m really pleased to be here.”
How did the move to York happen?
“I was actually sat having some tacos on holiday when I got a voice note from Hendo! I rang him back straight away and the move went from there really. I all got sorted within the space of about a week.”
You must be excited to join a side that had such a strong finish to last season to reach the Betfred Championship Play-Offs?
“Having sat down with Hendo, it was clear to see that the Club have got some big ambitions. I’m really excited to be part of that journey. Hopefully I can do a job for the team and help us get to where we’re looking to be in the future.”
Positionally, you played in lots of different roles for Newcastle. How useful is that utility value going to be here at York?
“I’m happy to play anywhere for the team, whether that’s a full-back, on the wing, in the centres or even at half-back!
“There’s lots of great players here that I’m looking to learn from, like Will Dagger and Richie Myler, players that I grew up watching on TV, so I’ll be looking to develop my own game as much as I can and do the best I can for the team.”
Having been at Newcastle for the last four years, you know all about the Betfred Championship...
“It's a really tough division. You saw last year that anyone can beat anyone on their day and that there’s no givens. You come up against some great players in this division. It’s a great challenge and one that I’m looking forward to continuing here at York.”
How excited are you to get going in 2024?
“I can’t wait! The facilities here are outstanding and one of the best in the division, it’s remarkable what’s going on here in York. The Club have got great ambitions and I’m really looking forward to seeing where we can go in 2024!”
