Homegrown Brining extends Knights stay

York City Knights are pleased to announce that hooker Kriss Brining has agreed a new one-year deal with the club for the 2021 Betfred Championship season.

26-year-old Brining returned to the club ahead of the 2019 campaign from Betfred Super League’s Salford Red Devils having made twenty-five appearances for the AJ Bell Stadium club over two seasons.

Prior to his move to Lancashire, Brining had initially played for five seasons with the Knights after first coming through the club’s scholarship program and remains the youngest player to have represented the club, making his debut in 2011 at the age of 17.

In his first spell with the Knights, Brining made eighty-six first-team appearances, scoring fifty-four tries in the process. The final two seasons saw him scorer forty-five tries in as many games, showcasing the ability and potential which drew Super League interest.

Since returning to the club, Brining has been an influential figure and regular presence in the matchday seventeen. 2019 saw him make twenty-three appearances, scoring four tries, as he helped York seal a memorable third-place finish in our return to the Betfred Championship.

2020 saw Brining make three competitive appearances before the season was curtailed.

Of Brining’s retention, head coach James Ford said: “Kriss has the ability to win us matches off the interchange with his speed and evasion out of dummy half and his intimidating defensive contact.

“I remember very well my first session at the club when a 16-year-old bent me in half in a non-contact drill!

“Kriss takes a great deal of responsibility for his own performances, always puts the team first and has matured into a leader within the group. I’m confident we’ll see a fitter and faster Kriss in 2021!

The hooker himself added: “I’m very happy to be back at the club for another year. It was an easy decision to be honest.

“The club seems to be in a very good position, on and off the field, and I think that is shown with the recent signings, retention of players and the number of fans that have been coming every week.”
