Hull KR v York Knights: Challenge Cup Quarter-Final Match Preview

  • 2 min read

York Knights will try to make history on Saturday 11th April, when they travel to Sewell Group Craven Park to face Hull KR in the quarter final of the Betfred Challenge Cup (1.30pm)!

York are looking to reach only their third ever semi-final of the competition. The first time was in 1931, when they beat Warrington 15-5 to reach their only final. The last time they got that far, they met Wigan at Elland Road in 1984, losing 14-8. Current Knights assistant coach, Graham Steadman was the star that day, as he was in the quarter final at Clarence Street against Castleford that year, scoring all York’s points in the 14-12 win.

The last time the Knights reached the quarter finals was in 2023, when they were beaten at home by Leigh, going down 34-14 after a great effort which saw them leading at half time.

This year, they come up against a Hull KR team starting to find their form in Betfred Super League, after a shaky start to the year.

They started their season with the 19-18 defeat at the LNER Community Stadium, on what was a memorable night for York on their debut in the top flight.

It’s taken a while for the current cup holders and Super League Champions to look at their best, but a 52-10 demolition of St.Helens in the league and a 24-6 derby win over Hull FC suggests they are now finding their mark.

Rovers have beaten Lock Lane (104-0) and Huddersfield Giants (52-12) to get to this stage of the competition, while York have come past Barrow (32-6) and Keighley Cougars (56–10).

It’s also the second consecutive year the clubs have met in the cup, with The Robins 44-2 winners in the third round at the LNER Community Stadium last year. They went on to beat Warrington Wolves, who featured Knights prop, Paul Vaughan in their side, 8-6 in the final.

A win this weekend for York would bring an end to a three match losing run, as well as being an upset in the competition.
