York City Knights Ladies go into Sunday’s match at Wigan Warriors’ Robin Park Arena fresh off the back of two Betfred Women’s Super League victories over much-fancied pair St Helens and Leeds Rhinos.
Those victories have seen the Knights truly shoot into contention for Super League success this season and, on Sunday, Lindsay Anfield’s team could open up a four-point gap at the top of the table after the Rhinos’ victory at St Helens on Thursday.
With confidence high and belief soaring, the Ladies face Wigan – a side they beat 46-0 in their first Betfred Women’s Challenge Cup tie of the of the season with an emphatic performance.
That afternoon saw the Warriors arrive at the LNER with a squad depleted through injuries but, with members returning to contention, they are likely to post a sterner test this weekend.
Their last match, away to Huddersfield Giants three weeks ago, saw them record a 30-18 win to pick up their first points of this season.
With confidence high from domestic performances, the Knights’ travelling squad will also include five players fresh from international duty.
English stars Hollie Dodd, Grace Field, Tara Jane Stanley and Olivia Wood recorded two victories with the latter making her debut against Wales before the four backed that up with a win over France.
Outside back Bettie Lambert also represented an Ireland side that defeated Italy in Udine.
The matches between the Knights and Wigan have form for being close battles and May 2021 produced a true classic when the two went head to head in the Challenge Cup, the Knights edging out the Warriors en route to that year’s final.
