Leeds Rhinos v York Knights: Match Preview

York Knights travel to Leeds Rhinos on Friday 20th February for their first ever away game in the Betfred Super League (8pm)!

After an incredible start to the season with the 19-18 win over treble winners, Hull KR at the LNER Community Stadium, Mark Applegarth’s team travel to AMT Headingley to take on Brad Arthur’s Rhinos.

Leeds began their season last week with a defeat at Leigh Leopards, naming a side missing six first-team players with injury, including captain Ash Handley, England international Mikolaj Oledzki, and Man of Steel Jake Connor.

While the teams have met in pre-season games and cup matches, the last time they met in the league was in 1985/86, which was York’s last time in the top flight.

That was the year when York pulled off a memorable 18-10 win over Leeds at Headingley, with Australian prop, Mick Marketo scoring a try and putting on a master class alongside current Knghts assistant coach, Graham Steadman who also scored a try and kicked five goals.

Leeds won the reverse fixture at Clarence Street, 14-12.

This will be the first competitive game between the two since 1995, when Ryedale-York lost 44-14 at Headingley in the Challenge Cup.

The match will be a return to Leeds for a number of York players, who were previously Rhinos earlier in their careers. Paul McShane, Ben Jones-Bishop and Justin Sangare have all worn blue and amber, as well as Jordan Thompson. Oli Field joined the Knights after coming through the Leeds Academy.

For Leeds, both Tom Nicholson-Watton and James McDonnell have both spent time on loan or on dual registration with the Knights.
