Paul Vaughan set to retire at the end of the 2026 season

York RLFC can confirm that veteran prop forward Paul Vaughan will retire from professional rugby league at the conclusion of the 2026 Betfred Super League season.
The former Australian and Italian international and State of Origin representative brings down the curtain on a remarkable 14-year career that has spanned over 300 top-flight games across the NRL, Super League, and international stage.
Vaughan joined the York Knights ahead of their 2026 campaign following impressive spells with the Canberra Raiders, St. George Illawarra Dragons, Canterbury Bulldogs, and Warrington Wolves. Throughout his career, he made appearances for New South Wales in State of Origin, earned caps for Australia and Italy, and established himself as one of the game's most powerful front-rowers.
In his final season at the LNER Community Stadium, Vaughan has played a crucial leadership role in the Knights’ forward pack, providing vital experience and guidance to the squad's emerging young talent.
On his retirement, Vaughan said: "Rugby league has been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember. What started as a childhood dream became a career and a journey I could never have imagined, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have lived it.
"To my family, teammates, coaches, staff and everyone who has supported me over the years, thank you. You’ve all played a part in a journey I’ll be forever proud of.
"To York Knights, thank you for giving me the opportunity to finish my career doing what I’ve loved since I was a kid. I wish the club, the boys and all the fans nothing but the best moving forward.
"I walk away from the game grateful, proud and with memories and friendships that will last a lifetime.
"What a ride. Thank you ❤️"
Head Coach, Mark Applegarth said: "I can’t speak highly enough of Paul.
"He chose to join us over a number of other offers to challenge himself and he’s certainly done that.
"He’s a man that leads by actions and I’ve really enjoyed coaching him and getting to know him and his family.
"We wish him and his family all the best in the next chapter and he will always be a Knight."
Thursday night's fixture against Bradford Bulls at the LNER Community Stadium will mark Paul’s final appearance before stepping away from rugby league.
