St.Helens v York Knights: Match Preview

York Knights make the trip to St.Helens in Betfred Super League, looking for back to back wins on Friday 1st May (8pm)!

The Knights’ 38-14 last win against Toulouse Olympique last weekend was their third of the season and it lifted them to 10th in the table.

Friday’s match promises to be a challenge against a St.Helens side who have risen to second in Super League, having won their last three league games and earned a place in the Betfred Challenge Cup semi-finals.

Last week, they overcame Wakefield Trinity, 18-12 and now sit behind leaders Leeds only on points difference.

Like many sides in the league, Saints coach, Paul Rowley has had to deal with a lengthy injury list. However, he’s now in a position to name a strong squad with the likes of Johnny Lomax and Alex Walmsley back, taking their places alongside the likes of Tristan Sailor, Jackson Hastings and Daryl Clark.

The last league meeting between the clubs was in the 1985/86 season, when York were coached by Phil Lowe, and Alex Murphy was in charge at Saints.

That year, York lost 30-8 at Knowsley Road, before a narrow 18-11 defeat at Clarence Street later in the season.

There have been a handful of cup meetings since then. The last time at Knowsley Road was in the 5th round of the Betfred Challenge Cup, when a St.Helens side including Sean Long were 62-0 winners.

It’s been ten years since the clubs last met, when they came together at the Brewdog Stadium in the 6th round of the Betfred Challenge Cup. Tyler Craig scored York’s only try in a 46-6 defeat.
