St.Helens v York Valkyrie: Match Preview

York Valkyrie go to St.Helens in the Betfred Women’s Super on Friday 28th August (5.15 KO) looking for back to back wins in the Super 4s!

Last week’s victory over Leeds Rhinos was York’s first since the league split, and the two points lifted them above St.Helens and into third place in the table on points difference.

With the top three going into the knock-out stages, the next couple of weeks with back to back games against St.Helens will be crucial for the Valkyrie’s play off ambitions.

There are just three games remaining, and there’s a six point gap to second place Leeds who have a superior points difference. It means there’s a battle going on for the final qualification spot between York and Saints.

St.Helens are still to pick up their first win in the Super 4s, having lost 44-6 and 56-4 against Wigan, and 34-24 to Leeds.

So like York, wins for them in the next couple of weeks will also be vital to help them clinch a play off place.

The teams have met just once this year, having avoided each other in the Betfred Challenge Cup. That league game was back in May at the LNER Community Stadium when Saints won 18-14.

Matches between the two are usually tight, but the last time York got the better of their opponents was in 2024 at the BrewDog Stadium, when they won 18-8 in the Super League Grand Final to claim back to back titles.

Leon Pryce’s side go into this one after arguably their best performance of the season, inflicting just a second defeat of the season on Leeds Rhinos by 18-14. That was the ideal response to a heavy loss at Wigan the week before.

Saints are on a three match losing run and haven’t won at home since beating Leigh Leopards in the final round of the first stage of the season.
