York Knights head coach, Mark Applegarth praised the character of his team following their hard fought win at Widnes Vikings on Sunday in the Betfred Championship.
The 12-6 win at the DCBL Stadium moved York up to fifth in the table and in to the play-off places with three games to go.
The match was played in poor weather conditions, with heavy rain making handling conditions difficult.
The Knights also saw out the last 16 minutes of the game with just 12 men, after Jacob Gannon was shown a red card.
“It’s a great win. Two evenly matched teams going at each other,” said Applegarth.
“I thought Widnes probably started better and beat us to the punch.
“It was great character we showed to hang in there and obviously when we got our chances we took them.
“Then after that red card happened, I thought we showed great character and grit to hang in there.
“It was a great advert for Championship rugby and two evenly matched teams going at each other. I’m really proud of our lads that we came out on the right end.
“I thought it was a great team effort. Fair play to Wardy and Joe for following it up.
“It was obviously difficult conditions. It was just one of them for me today with great desire shown and a real team performance. Two evenly matched teams.”
Regarding the weather conditions, Applegarth pointed out it was the same for both teams.
“You can only play the conditions and with the artificial surface it makes it a bit slippier.
“I thought there was some aggressive defence and I was just really happy we showed that desire to get the win.”
The Knights now face a wait to find out what will happen to Jacob Gannon, following his sending off.
“I’ll have to watch it on video,” said Applegarth.
“But how everyone rolled their sleeves up and got on with it is a credit to everyone today.
“Really happy with the two points but it’ll be back down to earth with a bang and ready for a tough challenge against the champions, Wakefield on Sunday.”
