York Knights quest for a play off spot in the Betfred Championship continues with a trip to Widnes Vikings on Sunday (3pm).
After a run of nine wins in 12 games, and a current run of four successive victories, Mark Applegarth’s side are in seventh place and two points outside the top six.
Victories over Whitehaven (40-0), Batley (37-6), Toulouse (20-12) and Dewsbury (54-12) have seen York stay in amongst the top pack.
The Vikings sit in fourth, three points ahead of York, and have won six of their last seven matches. Last week, they won 12-8 in a hard fought game at Batley Bulldogs, following on from a 35-20 win over Sheffield Eagles.
When York last met Widnes in May at the LNER Community Stadium, two late tries from the Vikings earned them a 22-18 win after the Knights had built a 14 point lead by half time.
Connor Fitzsimmons and Joe Brown scored to put York ahead in the first half, with Taylor Pemberton adding three goals.
Jimmy Keinhorst cancelled out a reply from Tom Gilmore before former Knight, Kieran Dixon crossed twice for Widnes to put them back to within two points.
Mike Butt scored the winner for the Vikings in the final minutes of the game, in what was the final match in charge for Andrew Henderson.
Since being promoted back to the Championship in 2019, York haven’t lost in the league at the DCBL Stadium. Victory this weekend, along with results elsewhere going their way, could take them into the play off spots.
York will still be without Jordan Thompson, who is serving the second game of his two match ban, having also missed the 40-0 win at Whitehaven at the weekend.
